Supreme Court refuses to ban liquor sale, suggests home delivery to maintain social distancing

NEW DELHI

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to pass any orders to ban the sale of liquor during the lockdown.

The apex court said the states could consider online delivery of alcohol to avoid crowds in front of liquor shops across the country and maintain social distancing.

“We will not pass any order. The states should consider indirect sale or home delivery of liquor to maintain social distancing,” the court order said.

Advocate Sai Deepak, while representing the petitioner, had said that social distancing norms are being flouted as people in large numbers assemble in front of wine shops and there is a mad scramble for buying the bottles.

Deepak had said that the mad rush in front of wine shops is putting the lives of common men in risk from COVID19 infection.

The counsel urged the top court to direct the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that all the state governments should adhere to the lockdown guidelines to stop the further spread of COVID19 pandemic.
